I found some painkillers in the bathroom cupboard and I hoped no-one would notice two of them missing. I washed my face and changed my clothes before rolling out my sleeping-bag and lying down, listening to the waves. What was I going to do now? I tried imagining things differently, if I hadn’t done that. That I’d shut up and helped them with the car-jacking and went home with five hundred dollars in my wallet. But I imagined Belinda Quick, frightened and bleeding, left alone in the carpark without her car, shocked and possibly injured. How could I have lived with myself if I’d gone down that road? And it wasn’t true that I’d only got a big fat zero from the whole incident. I was slowly realising that I’d kept something very important to me—my own basic goodness. My own self-respect.
